Communication, Education, and Public Awareness

Increasing awareness and understanding on biodiversity of policy and decision makers as well as the general public is expected to generate wider support for the conservation of biodiversity in ASEAN. By enhancing understanding on biodiversity, policy and decision makers are expected to give more support to biodiversity conservation efforts through more biodiversityfriendly policies, programmes, and projects. On the other hand, increasing public awareness on the value of biodiversity will result in behavioural change with more citizens taking a more active role in conserving biodiversity as well as making biodiversity conservation a way of life. 

The ACB will continue to enhance public and leadership awareness on the values of biodiversity and the need for its conservation and sustainable management through better communication, education, and public awareness.  With the aim of increasing understanding of biodiversity to promote biodiversity conservation and mainstreaming, the ACB will develop and implement a Strategic Communications Plan, which will contain ACB’s communication strategy encompassing the following: (i) social-media plan; (ii) ACB corporate branding guidelines; (iii) public relations plan; and (iv) AHP branding guidelines and communications plan. The ACB will use diverse communication channels and digital technologies to disseminate the different knowledge products of the Centre through the following:   

  1. Develop CEPA materials that popularise biodiversity information, issues, and concerns. These include knowledge products that will translate existing information derived from the ASEAN CHM , partners, and data providers, and various other outputs from supporting the implementation of current and upcoming ACB projects and activities, to forms useful for decision making and policy development. These products will increase the reach and understanding of biodiversity in the region as well as improve regional capacities in CEPA. Knowledge products will include, among others:  

    • Flyers 
    • Brochures 
    • Newsletters 
    • Field guides 
    • Magazines 
    • Exhibit modules 
    • Audio materials 
    • Video materials 
    • Web-based content (webpages, electronic/digital materials) 
    • Social media content 
    • e-books and videos to highlight issues/concerns and solutions in biodiversity conservation 
    • Regional maps
    • ASEAN Biodiversity Outlook.

  2. Conduct CEPA activities by engaging both the environment and non-environment sectors in advocacy for biodiversity conservation and sustainable management. CEPA activities will use more direct and person-to-person approaches in communicating key biodiversity messages. CEPA activities will include the conduct of media and press briefings, fora, conferences, seminars, and workshops.
