ASEAN Heritage Parks

Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park

Hilly and accented by valleys, this national park harbors a wealth of large animals, and also protects the drainage basin of two perennial rivers. Found inside the Park is a shrine and a reclining figure of Maha Kathapa, Buddha’s saintly disciple.

Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park covers an area of 159,761 hectares in the Mingin and Kani townships of Sagaing Division.

Unique Flora: Tree species like teak (Tectona grandis); ironwood (Xylia dolabriformis); Pyinkado (X. xylocarpa); Burma padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus); Burmese rosewood/Southeast Asian rosewood (Dalbergia oliveri); taeng (Shorea obtuse);S. siamensis; ->note: it appears the correct scientific name for “taeng” is Shorea obtusa. Kindly check.

Unique Fauna: Asian elephant (Elephas maximus); leopard; clouded leopard; black bear; gaur (Bos gaur); banteng (Bos banteng); sambar and barking deer; serow; goral; wild boar; wild dog; primates; Indo-Chinese tiger (Pantheratigriscorbetii); great hornbill; oriental pied hornbill; redheaded trogon; hoopoe; the endemic hooded treepie.

Habitat Types: Moist, upper mixed deciduous forests; dry upper mixed deciduous forests; lower mixed deciduous teak forests; indaing dry dipterocarp forests; some pine forests on higher ridges.

The Park offers excellent opportunities for research and study, especially on tiger conservation and management. Also present is the shrine of Alaungdaw Shinmahar Kathapa where visitors can worship.

Apart from the local pagoda festival, other activities include riding elephants; trekking in several types of natural forests; bird watching; and observing wildlife, butterflies, spectacular plants and orchids.

Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park also has guesthouses, log cabins, and campsites.
