Con Dao Marine Protected Area

Con Dao is listed as a highest priority conservation area in Viet Nam. Con Dao is the most important sea turtle nesting sites, and the area is well known for feeding ground for dugong and other marine mammal species (as Blue Whale, Indo-Pacific Finless Porpoise, Irrawaddy Dolphin), has some of the most pristine coral reef in Viet Nam. Many endangered and rare species can be found there, more than 66 marine species listed in the IUCN Red List and Viet Nam Data Red Book. Primeval forest with ecosystem providing niches for many species of terrestrial flora and fauna have been protected and rehabilitated. It also plays an important role for preventing soil erosion and keeping water in soil that supply sources of ground water and water reservoirs during dry season.

Con Dao National Park Authority is recognised as one of the best park management board in Vietnam, play important role in the biodiversity and ecosystem protection.

Located on the Con Dao archipelago, which is c. 80 km off the southern coast of Vietnam; Administrative area of Con Dao district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province. Geographical coordinates: 8°34’ to 8°49’ N, and 106°31’ to 106°45’ E.

1,077 species of vascular plants, 25 species of mammals, 85 species of birds, 50 species of reptiles, and 19 species of amphibians,

354 species of coral, 4 species of marine mammals, 208 species of phytoplankton, 143 species of zooplankton.

Unique Flora:

endemic: Dipterocarpus condorensis, Ilex condorensis, Pavetta condorensis and Psychotria condorensis.

globally threatened and near threated vascular plants including Cycas micholitzii (VU), Cycas siamensis (VU), Cycas pectinata (VU), Burmese Rosewood Dalbergia bariensis (EN), Afzelia xylocarpa (EN), Red Sandalwood Pterocarpus indicus (VU), Bruguiera hainesii (CR), Cycas rumphii (NT) and Platycladus orientalis (NT).

Unique Fauna: Con Son’s Black Giant Squirrel Ratufa bicolor condorensis or Con Son’s Long-tailed Macaque Macaca fascicularis condorensis. Endemic reptiles such as Con Dao Round eyed Gecko Cnemaspis boulengerii, and Con Dao Kukri Snake Oligodon condaoensis.

Habitat Types: Terrestrial forest, mangrove forest, seagrass bed and coral reef.

Sport tourism: hiking, trekking, swimming, diving and snorkelling for coral-watching, visit turtle laying grounds, releasing babies turtles, etc.; other tourism-scientific research combined activities. CDNP have been recognized as a marine-island and culture – history – spirituality eco-tourism area of high quality in the National and Provincial Master Plans on Development of Tourist Area.
